Two acronyms, one job.
An assistant that cites you had to find you first, and the things that make a page findable have not changed much. What has changed is what happens after it is found — so these guides cover both ends, and say plainly where the measurement gets unreliable.
The three terms, told apart.
- SEOSearch engine optimisation
- Making a page the result a search engine wants to return. Crawlability, structure, internal links, and answering the query the person actually typed.
- GEOGenerative engine optimisation
- Making a page the source an assistant reaches for when it composes an answer. Different unit of success: not a position on a list, but whether you are quoted, and how you are characterised when you are.
- AEOAnswer engine optimisation
- The narrower, older idea underneath GEO — structuring content so a machine can lift a direct answer out of it. Schema, question headings, and short self-contained passages.
Nobody outside the model vendors can see how a citation is chosen, and the tools that claim to measure it disagree with each other. We write about what is observable and say when something is inference.
The GEO and SEO libraries.
Two clusters, kept apart on purpose: what is specific to answer engines, and what is search work that would matter regardless.
How answer engines choose what to cite, what can be measured about it, and how to structure writing so it can be quoted.
